Putin, Rahmon want Afghan-Tajik border secured

Russian and Tajik presidents have underlined the need for enhancing security on the Tajik-Afghan border, a media report said on Saturday.

Vladimir Putin of Russia and Emomali Rahmon of Tajikistan met on the sidelines of an extraordinary meeting of the heads of state of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) in St. Petersburg.

A statement from Rahmon’s office said the two leaders stressed the need for stepped-up security on the border in light of the current situation in Afghanistan.

Putin and Rahmon also conferred on equipping Tajikistan’s army with modern military tools and technology to enable it to deal with security challenges.
