In a recent program highlighting the achievements of the Islamic Emirate’s departments, the Ministry of Public Health announced the construction of 105 health centers across eight provinces last year, funded by nearly $6 million.
The ministry detailed ongoing international collaborations aimed at further enhancing healthcare infrastructure. Initial discussions with China are underway for a $50 million grant dedicated to the reconstruction of Mirwais Regional Hospital. Additionally, talks with India focus on expanding the Indira Gandhi Hospital, while Qatar has commenced preliminary work on a large mother and child hospital.
Notable advancements have also been made in the treatment of cancer and congenital heart diseases in children, with officials promising significant progress in these areas soon, said the Ministry officials.
In a landmark development, the Ministry signed a contract to procure laboratory equipment for the country’s first DNA testing initiative, alongside establishing a zonal-level diagnostic reference laboratory in Kunduz province for $1 million.
The report highlighted the treatment of approximately 2.2 million mothers and children suffering from moderate to severe malnutrition. Furthermore, nearly 3,600 disabled individuals received assistive devices, including artificial limbs and wheelchairs. Mobile health teams provided over 1.1 million outpatient, maternity, vaccination, tuberculosis, and infectious disease services to children.
The ministry also reported on vital services rendered in forensic medicine, addressing 671 critical and 917 fatal cases. During the recent Hajj ceremony, health services were provided to 30,000 Afghan pilgrims in Saudi Arabia, alongside the implementation of meningitis and influenza vaccination programs.
In terms of public safety, 1,077 tons of substandard and expired food and medicine were collected and destroyed last year. The ministry granted permission for the marketing of 19,436 shipments of imported food products, ensuring better quality control in the market.
