Afghan government hopes that the Taliban will enter direct negotiations after September, President Ashraf Ghani’s spokesman said on Tuesday.
Addressing a press conference in Kabul, Sediq Sediqqi also hoped the US and the Taliban reach a “preliminary memorandum of understanding” before September 1.
He said that the Afghan government was fully aware of details of US-Taliban talks, adding they were moving in the positive direction.
Sediqi also said that the results of two-day intra-Afghan dialogue in Qatar were positive, but criticized lack of issue of safety of media.
Referring to Taliban’s call for Islamic system in Afghanistan, Sediqqi said that the country already has an Islamic system, adding the Constitution is clear about it.
He also said that for a democratic Afghanistan and transfer of legal and political legitimacy, election must be held.
“We believe the foundation of a comprehensive and sustainable peace is that a legitimate government represents Afghanistan and its people,” Sediqqi said.
