Taliban’s failure to reduce violence in Afghanistan could derail a potential peace deal with the United States, a Trump administration official has warned.
“If the Taliban do not live up to their agreement on reduction of violence, then we’ll take a very careful look at it, and I think it’d be unlikely that we’d sign a peace treaty,” the official said.
Trump’s National Security Adviser Robert O’Brien said in an interview on Sunday: “We’re not going to reduce troops to a level below what is necessary to protect American interests in Afghanistan,”
Speaking to CBS News, the advisor hoped an intra-Afghan dialogue would begin on reaching a political resolution of the ongoing conflict.
He added the US troops had had got to get out of the war in Afghanistan, but their withdrawal should happen in a way that protected American interests.
As part of an understanding with the US, the Taliban have already entered a week-long reduction in violence period across Afghanistan.
If the militant movement abides by its commitment, a US-Taliban treaty on ending the war in Afghanistan could be signed at the end of the current moth.
