Officials from Afghanistan Banks Association said modern banking system has made a dramatic improvement in recent years as according to them more customers are using debit cards and online banking system.
According to the association, at least seven types of debit cards are used in bank deposits and transactions in the country.
The association said that at least 12 percent of Afghans have access to banking services, of which eight percent have full acquaintance with electronic banking system.
Based on statistics of Afghanistan Banks Association, from 3.5 million depositors, 300,000 of them use different types of debit cards for banking.
“People’s trust has increased in electronic banking, because it is carried out in a short time and with more transparency,” said Idris Alimi, head of communication department of the association.
“Some of these cards are used for payment of money and some others for internet banking,” said Abdullah Khetab, a banker.
Meanwhile, a number of residents stressed the need for expansion of banking services in the country.
They called on government to increase banking services in remote areas of Afghanistan.
“By using this device, we are paying the salaries of one institution even in most remote areas. This works as a bank branch,” said Asif Behroz, a technical staff of a private financial firm.
Analysts said banks should increase investment in the country so that banking culture is further promoted.
