The Taekwondo Federation chief for northern Kunduz province has mysteriously been killed, an official said on Monday.

Police spokesman Inamuddin Rahmani told Pajhwok Afghan News the predawn incident occurred in limits of the 1st police district at about 2:00am.

Rahmani said Kamil Karimi, a fitness and bodybuilding champion, refused to stop intelligence personnel’s orders to stop his car at a security checkpoint.

As the National Directorate of Security (NDS) personnel fired into the air, Kamil’s car was crashed into a roadside tree, the police spokesman added.

An investigation has been conducted to ascertain whether Karimi’s death resulted from the accident or gunfire from the NDS personnel, according to Rahmani.

Meanwhile, Ziaulaq Ziaee, a relative of the victim, told Pajhwok Karimi had received death threats in the recent past. He said an NDS agent was also wounded in the incident.

The NDS personnel are yet to say anything with regard to Karimi’s death.
