Khalilzad Had ‘Productive Meetings’ In Abu Dhabi

The US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad said he had productive meetings in UAE with Afghan and international partners to promote intra-Afghan dialogue towards ending the conflict in Afghanistan. 

Khalilzad said in a tweet that he is grateful to UAE for hosting the talks.

“Had productive mtgs in UAE w Afghan & intl partners to promote intra-Afghan dialogue towards ending the conflict in #Afghanistan. Grateful to UAE for hosting talks & their commitment to founder’s legacy as Year of Zayed ends & Year of Tolerance begins,” he tweeted on Wednesday.

The United Arab Emirates hosted the US-Taliban reconciliation talks in Abu Dhabi, with the participation of Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.

The two-day Afghan reconciliation conference fructified in tangible results that are positive for all parties concerned.

According to Emirates News Agency, another round of talks will be held in Abu Dhabi to complete the Afghanistan reconciliation process.

Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates extend their thanks to Afghan President Ashraf Ghani as well as the US, Pakistani and Taliban delegations for their effective participation and support for ensuring the success of the conference, the agency said in a report on Wednesday.

In a new statement, Taliban said that the Abu Dhabi talks were held between US and Taliban representatives and that representatives of three other countries also attended the meeting.

The statement said that withdrawal of foreign forces from Afghanistan was main part of the talks. The statement added that the Taliban delegation asked for a halt in “bombardments against civilians” and meanwhile humanly treatment with prisoners and their exchange were also discussed in the meeting.
