The US Special Envoy for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad arrived in Kabul on Sunday Afternoon, Tolonews reported.
Khalilzad told the news channel he will leave no stone unturned to bring stability and peace to Afghanistan.
“To break the stalemate and bring peace to Afghanistan, I will utilize all my ability and the relations I have in the region and globally,” the veteran diplomat said.
He said the peace process will eventually save all the achievements and sacrifices mad over the past years.
His stop in Kabul is part of a 10-day long trip to Afghanistan, Qatar, Pakistan, UAE and Saudi Arabia to facilitate peace talks between Afghan government and Taliban, a move which is expected to lead to a political settlement of the longest war in the US history.
It’s still not clear that how long Khalilzad will stay in Kabul and whom he will meet with apart from the leaders of the National Unity Government.
Khalilzad, who used to be US ambassador to UN, Afghanistan and Iraq, was recently appointed as US Special Representative for Afghanistan reconciliation. His appointment came after a paradigm shift in US policy regarding Afghan peace process as top American diplomats for the first time held peace talks with Taliban representatives in Qatari capital Doha.
