The former president of Afghanistan Hamid Karzai has condemned the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran in the “strongest terms”.
“This act of terrorism and against international rules takes place at a time when efforts were being made to establish a ceasefire in Gaza, and there was hope for the end of the war and the realization of peace in the region. Therefore, it can be called an action against peace and security in the Middle East,” said Karzai on his Facebook page.
While emphasizing the need for parties to refrain from escalating tension, Karzai called for peace in the region through the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on respect for the rights of its people.
Haniyeh was killed in the early hours of Wednesday morning while in Tehran for the inauguration ceremony of Iran’s newly elected president.
