The government on Monday welcomed UNAMA’s support for this month’s presidential election.

UNAMA has urged the poll panels, civil society, candidates and other stakeholders to redouble their efforts before polls opened.

“An emphatic message from delegates at last week’s UN Security Council session was that the international community fully supports presidential elections taking place on September 28,” said Tadamichi Yamamoto, the secretary-general’s special representative.

In response, President Ashraf Ghani’s spokesman Sediq Seddiqi tweeted: “The Afghan govt. welcomes UNAMA’s support for the upcoming election.”

He wrote the government, as an embodiment of genuine democracy, was committed to safeguarding the rights of citizens to vote, including women, as an effort to preserve hard-earned democratic values that have been institutionalized during the last 18 years.
