The Islamic Emirate’s appointed envoy to the UN, Suhail Shaheen, once again called on the UN to allow him to represent Afghanistan.
Shaheen said that since the former government of Afghanistan has collapsed, its envoy cannot represent Afghanistan.
“The Kabul Administration exists no more and has no components of a government while IEA, having all components of a government, is the only and real representative of the people of Afghanistan,” Shaheen said in a tweet on Thursday.
Some political analysts expressed concerns over the uncertain status of Afghanistan’s seat at the UN, saying that such uncertainty would have negative consequences for Afghanistan.
“The presence of Mr. Ishaqzai at the UN is meaningless and useless. The president fled and there is no Republic in Afghanistan,” said political analyst Salim Kakar.
The UN earlier denied the envoy of the Islamic Emirate from taking Afghanistan’s seat. The UN also extended the tenure of Ghulam Mohammad Ishaqzai, the permanent representative of Afghanistan to the UN.
However, Ishaqzai refrained from representing Afghanistan at the 76th assembly of the UN for reasons that are unclear.
The Islamic Emirate swept into power in Afghanistan over a month ago, but have yet to be recognized by any country in the world. Diplomatic ties with Afghanistan have been suspended by many countries.
Hamid Obaidi, an international relations expert, said: “The Taliban should understand international relations–the international issues and mutual interests.”
Afghanistan was accepted as a member of the UN on November 19, 1946.
