The Islamic State (Daesh) supremo, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, is believed to be hiding in Afghanistan, a British tabloid reported on Saturday.
The Sun quoted a security expert as saying Baghdadi fled his hideout in the Middle East when the Islamic State caliphate in Iraq collapsed.
He might have joined other ISIS leaders and fighters in eastern Afghanistan, suggested Zaid Hamid, a founding member of the BrassTacks threat analysis think tank.
A veteran of the Afghan-Soviet war, Hamid tweeted: “This is a grab from the latest video of ISIS leader Baghdadi. Note the style of the bedding & the pillows….Is he already in Afghanistan?”
The most wanted terrorist leader was in the Khorasan province and one follower said: “A very valid observation sir.”
The ISIS leader could be staying somewhere in the war-torn country due to the decor shown in the video, another expert claimed
On Monday, Baghdadi appeared in a new video, where he mentioned the Easter bombings in Sri Lanka. It was his second confirmed appearance since 2014.
But counter-terrorism expert Dr Paul Stott, from the Henry Jackson Society, said the background in the video was unlikely to provide clues to Baghdadi’s whereabouts.
