Iran says 95% of foreign prisoners are Afghans

Afghan nationals constitute 95 percent of foreigners imprisoned in Iran, Kazem Gharib Abadi, Vice-President of the Judiciary of Iran for International Affairs, has said.

The officials said that the necessary follow-ups for the transfer of prisoners based on the bilateral agreement are being carried out and there is hope that it will be completed by the end of this year, according to ISNA news agency,

He did not provide details about the exact number of Afghan prisoners or the total number of foreign prisoners in Iran.

Last year, Alireza Mahmoudi, the Iranian Foreign Ministry’s Director General of Consular Affairs, said that about 6,000 Afghan citizens were imprisoned in Iran.

In March last year, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) said that the process of repatriating prisoners from Iran had started.
