Iran renews support for Afghan led, owned peace process

Iranian President’s Special Envoy Mohammad Ibrahim Taheryan has said that his country supported an Afghan led and owned process, according to a statement on Saturday.

During a meeting with President Ashraf Ghani, Taheryan reaffirmed Iran’s support to reconciliation process in Afghanistan, a statement from Presidential Palace said.

Both sides discussed promoting Iran and Afghanistan bilateral relationship and Afghan peace and reconciliation process.

The Iranian president’s envoy briefed the president about the Taliban delegation’s visit to Tehran and added his country strived for durable peace and stability in Afghanistan.

A Taliban delegation from Qatar office recently traveled to Tehran and held a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Jawad Zarefi.

There are also reports that the Taliban and US have resumed their talks which were suspended by US President Donald Trump after a suicide blast in Kabul that killed over 12 people including a US soldier.
