An intra-Afghan dialogue is the best way to end dour decades of conflict in neighboring Afghanistan, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan says.
He has also stressed the need for continued military cooperation between Pakistan and the United States on dealing with emerging security threats, specifically the militant Islamic State group.
Khan was speaking to new commander of the US Central Command (CENTCOM) Gen Kenneth McKenzie Jr. — who is on a familiarization tour to the region — in Islamabad on Monday.
Gen McKenzie also met Defense Minister Pervez Khattak, Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua, Chief of Army Staff Gen Qamar Bajwa, Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Gen Zubair Hayat and others.
The premier renewed his commitment to peace and stability in Afghanistan through a political settlement. Direct engagement among Afghan stakeholders had the greatest prospects to end the prolonged conflict.
McKenzie reaffirmed United States’ commitment to security and stability in the region.
The Afghan stakeholders should sit together to discuss the contours of their future polity after the withdrawal of foreign troops, Khan said, reiterating Pakistan’s desire for good relations with Afghanistan.
Gen McKenzie was also briefed on Pakistan’s commitment to the implementation of the National Action Plan, which has been approved by all political parties.
