The Independent Election Commission (IEC) has finalized the presidential elections timeline based on which voter registration will start on June 8 and the polls will take place on September 28.

Based on the previous timeline, voter registration was scheduled for May 16. The commission has announced to use biometric system in the process, but it has reversed its decision in this regard.

The IEC has decided not to use biometric system both in the voter registration process and on the election day.

“Article 19 of election law clearly says that the election commission can take some measures on a number of policies and procedures to regulate electoral affairs,” said Mirza Mohammad Haqparast, a spokesman for the IEC.

Article 19 of the election law also says that biometric recognition technology should be used in all phases of the elections, including the voter registration process and voter identification.

The provincial councils’ elections as well as Ghazni parliamentary elections will be held along with the presidential elections on September 28.
