Independent Election Commission said on Saturday that it had prepared a draft timetable for the presidential election expected to be held next year.
Syed Hafizullah Hashimi, a spokesman for IEC, told reporters that the timetable would be shared with political parties, observers and the Electoral Complaints Commission this week for consultation before being officially announced.
The presidential election is planned for April 20 next year, according to Reuters report published in July.
The latest announcement comes as IEC is tallying votes from last weekend’s parliamentary election in 32 provinces.
The voting saw a high turnout – around 4 million – but it was marred by widespread organizational and technical failures.
IEC’s Hashimi said that votes from Panjshir and Laghman have been tallied so far.
Meanwhile, in Kandahar, polling stations opened yesterday (Saturday) after a delay caused by the assassination of its police chief General Abdul Raziq.
