The Embassy of the IEA has expressed deep concern over the arrest of approximately 800 Afghan nationals in Islamabad by Pakistani police.
In a statement released today, Tuesday the Embassy highlighted that these arrests include individuals with valid visas, PoR (Proof of Registration) cards, and ACC (Afghan Citizen Cards). The lack of clarity regarding the conditions for obtaining an NOC (No Objection Certificate) has led to troubling instances of arbitrary detention and deportation.
Among those deported, 137 had expired visas but had already applied for their renewal. Additionally, holders of temporary registration with SHARP/UNHCR are also among the deported individuals. This situation has resulted in family separations, including women and children, many of whom remain stranded in Pakistan.
The Embassy is particularly concerned about reports of unnecessary arrests, house raids, and extortion targeting Afghan nationals. It has called on the Pakistani government to address these serious concerns urgently.
The Embassy has officially raised these issues with the relevant Pakistani authorities and urged UNHCR and other human rights organizations to intervene promptly. Ensuring the dignity, rights, and safety of Afghan nationals residing in Pakistan is imperative.
