Education authorities in Herat have established 43 new schools across the province since the start of the academic year in March 2024, significantly expanding access to education for thousands of children.
Mawlavi Rahmatullah Jabbar, Herat’s director of education, confirmed the new facilities include 5 public and 38 private schools now operating in Herat city and seven surrounding districts: Injil, Guzara, Karukh, Pashtun Zarghun, Obe, Robat Sangi, Gulran, and Shindand.
“We’re working to fully equip these schools with materials and qualified teachers,” Jabbar told Bakhtar News Agency, noting the initiative addresses critical shortages in remote areas.
Parents in previously underserved communities reported dramatic improvements. “Our children now attend school just minutes from home,” said a Robat Sangi resident. “Before, they walked hours through dangerous terrain.”
The expansion comes amid the Islamic Emirate’s nationwide education reforms, though girls’ access to secondary schooling remains restricted in some provinces. All new facilities meet basic infrastructure standards and will undergo regular quality inspections, officials emphasized.
