Hezb-i-Islami Afghanistan (HIA) chief Gulbadin Hekmatyar left Kabul for Tashkent for peace-related discussions, a source in the party said on Monday.
Mohammad Nader Afghan, a senior HIA member, told Pajhwok Afghan News the trip was of high importance as far as the peace process was concerned. However, he gave no more details.
Addressing a press conference on Sunday, the HIA head said the performance of the government showed it lacked the will, capacity and plans for peace and was trying to play the same game with the Taliban it had played with his party.
A peace agreement between Hekmatyar and the government was signed on September 23, 2017. The deal was then hailed as a landmark agreement.
He said US special representative Zalmay Khalilzad had asked Kabul and Taliban to introduce negotiating teams. The government created the HPC-B instead of introducing a qualified team, he alleged.
Hekmatyrar’s trip to Turkmenistan came at a time when Taliban, US, Pakistani, Saudi and United Arab Emirates (UAE) representatives were meeting in the UAE.
