The government says it is working with ICRC on providing medical services to inmates in Bagram and Pul-i-Charkhi prisons.

National Security Council (NSC) spokesman Javed Faisal tweeted on Monday they were working with the global humanitarian body on assessing the condition of prisoners.

He said the problem of inmates could not be resolved with medical treatment alone. Their issues could be better addressed by Taliban’s cooperation with the peace process, he added.

Faisal’s remarks come after the Taliban expressed concern over the possible spread of the coronavirus among the prisoners.

Zabihullah Mujahid, the movement’s spokesman, said the number of prisoners was high. If the inmates were infected by COVID-19, it would be a humanitarian disaster, he warned.

Earlier, Javed Faisal told Pajhwok the government had proposed a mechanism for the peace process to move forward.

The insurgents would have to work with the government to find a solution, get their prisoners released and push the peace process forward, the official said.
