Presidential Candidate Mohammad Haneef Atmar accuses the government of purging political opponents, calling the practice illegal.
Talking at a press conference in Kabul, the former National Security Advisor said the government has removed officials who had joined electoral tickets other than of President Ghani’s.
“An illegal purge of political dissidents has been launched in the government. The prime target of the cleansing is members of the Peace and Moderation ticket as at least 12 high ranking officials have been either fired or forced to resign recently,” Atmar claimed.
After joining the Peace and Moderation ticket, President Ghani removed Second Deputy of Chief Executive, Mohammad Mohaqiq, however, he still attends meetings of Council of Ministers and continues his job.
Atmar said President Ghani has the authority to dismiss government officials, however, the authority should not be misused for personal and political interests.
The presidential runner also criticized the government for the unilateral dismissal of electoral commissioners, stressing that the alliance of presidential hopefuls was not consulted on the decision.
He also said the period between the end of National Unity Government term and presidential election should be discussed at Loya Jirga which is expected to be held in Kabul within a month.
Atmar said the government’s term ends on May 22, nearly two months before presidential election on July 20.
“Considering the government’s performance, there is no nationwide trust that the current government could lead us to a free, fair, inclusive and credible election.
“It is essential that the nation discusses the issue at the Loya Jirga and considers constitutional solutions.”
President Ghani, who is seeking reelection, has previously said that he would remain in office till presidential election results.
Haroon Chakhansoori, a presidential spokesman, said that the dismissals were part of the government’s reform plan.
