Ghani asks IEC to schedule presidential polls

President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has asked the Independent Elections Commission of Afghanistan (IEC) to ascertain and announce the date for the presidential elections.
The Office of the President, ARG Palace, in a statement said President Ghani met with the members of the election commission, special UN envoy for Afghanistan, EU representatives, and some Ambassadors on Sunday evening to discuss the ongoing preparations for the upcoming elections.
The statement further added that the Independent Election Commission shared information regarding the preparations for the upcoming parliamentary and district councils’ elections.
The government leadership asked the Independent Election Commission to assure the people regarding the circumstances surrounding the voters’ registration and pave the way for the monitoring and evaluation of the process for the political parties, civil society institutions, and international watch groups.
According to ARG Palace, President Ghani emphasized that any interference in the elections process would be considered a crime and the government has taken necessary precautions to prevent the interference of the government employees in elections process.
He also added that the leadership of the government of national unity is committed to organize the elections.
