Ghani announces 3-month conditional ceasefire with Taliban

President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani announced three months conditional ceasefire with the Taliban entering into effect from tomorrow and would last till Eid Melad-ul-Nabi.

Ghani made the announcement while addressing a gathering at Darulaman Palace marking the 99th Independence Day on Sunday.

The president, however, linked the ceasefire with similar announcement from the Taliban side and added sustainability of the truce belonged to the Taliban commitment.

“The truce not only provides us with the completion of Ghazi Amanullah Khan’s mission but it would provide us with a fresh opportunity and new beginning,” said Ghani.

He called on the Taliban to honour the well of the people and get ready for peace talks in the light and spirit of national and Islamic values.

Earlier, the president Ashraf Ghani has said his government would decide on announcing ceasefire with the Taliban after consultations and receiving suggestions from various sections of the society,

Ghani stressed the ceasefire must be bilateral and aimed at bringing peace and stability to the country.

He was speaking at a meeting with High Peace Council (HPC) Chairman Karim Khalili, UlemaCouncil Head Mualvi Qeyamuddin Kashaf and other HPC members at the Presidential Palace.
