European Union deplored the announcement by the de facto authorities of Afghanistan that banned Afghan teenage girls to attend classes from 6th grade upwards.
The press release that is made public on Thursday, March 24, 2022, reads that access to education is a fundamental right of all humans that is essential for building a prosperous Afghanistan.
“Access to education for all is a fundamental right, enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and essential to building a prosperous and self-reliant Afghanistan. This decision is contrary to the previous statements by the Taliban where they had assured the Afghan people of their commitment to the right of education for all Afghan citizens.” Reads the press release.
The European Union has said, the announcement by the Taliban is a major setback for women’s and girls’ rights in Afghanistan.
The EU urged the Taliban to honor their commitments about school reopening and immediately reopening schools for Afghan girls and boys.
It has added that the actions of the Taliban matter both for Afghans and the International Community, not the pledges.
Based on the decision of the Taliban, Afghan girls are only allowed to go to schools up to grade 6th.
