Doctors at Bamyan Provincial Hospital report an increase in diarrhea cases in the center and districts of this province.

They say that since the beginning of Saratan (solar calendar), they have treated over 5,000 children and adolescents.

Basiroddin Maroof, chief physician at Bamyan Provincial Hospital, said: “This summer, we had 5,432 diarrhea patients, most of whom came from the center, districts of Bamyan, and neighboring provinces.”

Excessive heat, lack of hygiene, transmission of viruses, and poverty are said to be the main causes of the diarrhea outbreak.

Dr. Agha Shafa stated: “Environmental hygiene, the economic level of the community, and the type of child nutrition affect the disease. Most children suffer from malnutrition and easily contract diseases.”

Dr. Zalmai Golzad added: “The usual cause of this disease is a type of virus that becomes more active in hot weather, and poor hygiene is another contributing factor.”

Dr. Ali Kazem Mousavi advised: “For patients with diarrhea, rice water, yogurt, and bananas should be given, and iced water, sugary, and fatty foods should be avoided.”

Families of some patients express concern over providing healthy food and treatment for their children due to poverty and unemployment.

Khadija, the mother of a sick child, said: “Life is not good, and I cannot afford treatment for my child outside the hospital.”

According to doctors, in addition to diarrhea and vomiting, many children are also suffering from measles and malnutrition and are currently under treatment in this hospital.
