Conditions for political stabilization in Syria created thanks to Russia, says Lavrov

Russia has helped to prevent Syria’s disintegration and create conditions for political stabilization in that country, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Tuesday.

“Russia is helping to reach political settlement to numerous crises and conflicts, including in Syria,” he said. “Thanks to our steps in Syria, it has become possible to deliver a decisive blow on terrorists, to prevent disintegration of Syria’s statehood, to create conditions for the return of refugees and political stabilization in conformity with the resolutions of the January 30 Syrian National Dialogue Congress in Sochi.”

“It was there [at the Sochi Congress] that the [Syrian ceasefire] guarantor nations – Russia, Iran and Turkey – and delegations from the Syrian government and the opposition agreed realistic conditions for the implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2254,” Lavrov noted.

The Syrian National Dialogue Congress in Russia’s Black Sea resort city of Sochi on January 30-31 yielded an agreement on a constitutional committee in Syria. The committee will be tasked to elaborate recommendations on amendments to the Syrian constitution.
