President Ashraf Ghani on Sunday ordered the creation of a committee comprised of government figures and representatives of political parties to assess suggestions for transparent polls.
Ghani issued the order while chairing a high-level meeting at his office on Saturday evening, a statement from the Presidential Palace said. Timetable and conduct of the October election were discussed.
Earlier, political parties had warned if the government, the electoral bodies and the international community did not accept their demands, Afghanistan would plunge into a major crisis.
Heads of political parties and alliances have termed the voter registration process inappropriate and rigged, demanding documentation exercised based on the biometric system.
The leadership of major parties stressed the need for transparency in upcoming polls by changing the current Single-Non-Transferable Vote (SNTV) system to Multi-Dimensional Representation (MDR).
