The Trump administration is revealing the true face of the United States, which perceives itself as a standard-bearer for civilization and human rights. Since World War II, the United States of America has meddled in the internal affairs of many countries and even in some in cases invaded them under the fallacious pretext of human rights, war on terrorism and drugs. Washington has so far tried to camouflage its interference in the internal affairs of other countries in a way that it is not viewed as an occupier. After Donald Trump’s rise to power, the United States has resorted to actions that show it is somehow at war with the entire world, including some of its allies.
Trump’s rule demonstrates American “occupation mentality”. In a latest development, Trump’s National Security Adviser John Bolton has warned the International Criminal Court (ICC) to call off its investigations into the war crimes committed by US troops and intelligence officials in Afghanistan, or else its judges and prosecutors involved in the probe will face sanctions. He has even threatened that if the court proceeded with the investigation into alleged war crimes committed by Americans or any investigation into other US allies, they would prosecute ICC officials in the US criminal system.
Bolton’s statements prove nothing, but fear from and enmity with justice. The international humanitarian law must be enforced on American troops, no matter under which name or what kind of agreement are they operating in Afghanistan. If American soldiers are fighting against terrorism, it should not mean that they are above the laws and human values. If the United States claims being a civilized country, and that its military interventions are not for occupation, but human prosperity, it has to allow neutral international organizations to prosecute the soldiers accused of committing war crimes. If the US believes its soldiers are innocent, why it should be scared of justice. However, if it knows that its soldiers have committed war crimes and crimes against humanity around the world, it should no longer deceive the international community under humanitarian mottos, and must clearly state that America is a promoter of occupation than civilization.
