Following ban on the Pakistani currency in neighboring Khost province, officials and residents in southeastern Paktika province have launched a campaign to promote the use of Afghani.
Mohammad Rasoul Adel, chief of staff at the Paktika governor’s office, told a gathering that the use and promotion of Afghan currency was a national duty of every government and non-governmental institutions.
He said the provincial government had planned that in the first stage, government officials should use the Afghani in markets, then shopkeepers and in the final stage the masses would be asked to use the national currency for purchasing goods.
Zabtullah Malang, head of the Haj and Religious Affairs Department, said: “The Afghani is our national currency and it should be used in all our business activities in order to strengthen our economy,” he said.
He asked shopkeepers and all residents of Paktika to strengthen the campaign and promote the use of Afghan currency.
Tela Khan, head of the Paktika Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said the economy would be strengthened if all people used the Afghani instead of foreign currency.
Civil society activist Azmatullah Katawazai asked the government to take strong measures to ensure the use of domestic currency.
Earlier, similar campaigns had been launched in Khost, Paktia and other provinces to promote the use of Afghan currency.
