Afghan forces have recaptured the center of Kohistan district of northwestern Faryab province from Taliban militants, an official said Friday.
The Afghan forces retaken control of Kohistan district during an operation launched on Thursday night and continued until Friday afternoon.
Brig. Gen. Nabi Jan Mullahkhel, Faryab police chief, told Pajhwok Afghan News that Afghan forces launched ground and air operation in Lolash area of the district the night before last and recaptured the center of the district and Qazat and Mulla Arifi villages from the militants.
He said more than 30 Taliban insurgents including some of the group’s commanders were killed and scores others wounded during the operation.
Ahmad Javid Salim, spokesman to Commando Unit in the northern zone, also wrote on his Facebook page that Taliban militants suffered huge losses in Kohistan operation.
On the other hand, Haji Amin, a local Taliban commander in Khwaja Sabzposh district of Faryab claimed two commando forces were killed and five others wounded in their attack in Kussa Qala area of the district. However, local security officials confirmed the death of only one commando and the injury of two others in the incident.
A Taliban commander in Kohistan district of Faryab, who wished to go unnamed, confirmed the Taliban left the center of Khoistan district.
He said a number of Taliban fighters were killed and wounded during an airstrike on a mosque in the district.
