The Wakhan Transit Corridor in Afghanistan’s Badakhshan province was officially inaugurated and put into operation today. The major economic project is expected to provide Afghanistan with a direct land connection to China.

Mullah Hamdullah Fitrat, deputy spokesman for the Islamic Emirate, said the road stretches 121 kilometers from the Broghil area through the Waghjir Valley of the Pamirs to the Chinese border.

According to Fitrat, the road includes 66 culverts, four major bridges, and up to 4,000 meters of retaining walls.

He said the road was officially opened for use today.

The Wakhan Transit Corridor was reportedly inaugurated during a ceremony attended by senior officials of the Islamic Emirate and local authorities.

Speaking at the ceremony, the district governor of Wakhan described the route as an important transit and economic road, saying that previously, few people could have imagined that such a road would one day be constructed and opened for public use.

The project is considered economically and commercially significant for Afghanistan, as it provides the country with a direct overland connection to China through the Wakhan Corridor.
