Unidentified gunmen have torched a middle school in the Urgon district of southeastern Paktika province, an official said on Saturday.
Shafiullah, principal of the school, told Pajhwok Afghan News that unknown gunmen torched the Naswan Zarabi Middle School of boys and girls on Friday night.
He said the school building, all textbooks; copies of the holy Quran, documents, desks and chairs were burnt.
Mohammad Naseem Wajid, an official in the provincial education department, confirmed the incident and said at least 900 students, including 400 girls, were studying in the school.
He said 21 girls had been graduated from the school this year. Investigation was underway in this regard, he added.
The school’s guard said the fire erupted at the building at 3am. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the incident.
