Samangan’s wheat yield up by 60pc this year

Wheat production in northern Samangan province is estimated at more than 72,000 tons this year, showing a 60 percent increase as compared to last year’s harvest.
Mohammad Aman Hanafi, Samangan acting agriculture director, told Pajhwok Afghan News that frequent rainfalls in spring contributed to the increase in wheat yield this season.
The agriculture department’s estimates show wheat crops was cultivated on 172,000 hectares of land this year in Samangan and the land is estimated to produce 72,300 tons of the crop, he said.
He added last year’s wheat crop weighed 45,200 tons.
Samangan farmers are also happy with the wheat yield.
Mohammad Shamsuddin, a resident of Gul Qeshlaq area of Aibak, capital of Samangan, said he cultivated 37 acres of land with wheat crop last year and reaped 4.45 tons of wheat and the same land produced 9.8 tons this year.
There are also reports of bumper wheat production in other provinces of the country.
