The Ministry of Energy and Water has announced that 80% of the construction work on the Pashdan Dam in Herat province has been completed.
Matiullah Abed, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Energy and Water, stated that this dam has the capacity to irrigate 13,000 acres of agricultural land and is expected to be completed by the end of the current solar year.
“The Pashdan Dam in Herat province is a significant project in water management. Fortunately, 80% of its construction has been completed. This project will irrigate 13,000 acres of agricultural land, generate 2 megawatts of electricity, and store 54 million cubic meters of water,” said the spokesperson for the Ministry of Energy and Water.
“Water is a valuable resource for sustaining life. Fortunately, Afghanistan has vast water resources. We have 85 billion cubic meters of water, and if properly managed, we can produce 23,000 megawatts of electricity, 10,000 of which are sufficient for Afghanistan’s needs, and the remaining 13,000 can be exported to other countries,” stated Abdul Zahoor Madbar, an economic expert.
The Chamber of Agriculture and Livestock, considering Afghanistan’s drought conditions, views the construction of water dams as impactful for the development of agriculture in the country.
Previously, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, the Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs, described better water management as a national responsibility for competing globally and economic growth. He said that the Islamic Emirate is determined to use all available means to strive for better water management.
