Five hundred prisoners to be released from prison in western Herat province fearing the spread of coronavirus among them, an official said on Sunday.
Herat Prison Director Maiwand Samadi on the occasion of the release of some prisoners said these prisoners are being freed in compliance to presidential decree.
He said the process of the release of 500 prisoners started from last night and would be completed in a couple of days. Last night over 144 prisoners were freed, he added.
Among freed prisoners were ten women and 80 children.
“Prisoners involved in non-serious crimes such as traffic accident, possession of arms have been freed,” he added.
Hameedullah, a free prisoner said: “We are happy to be freed and we learned a lesson from lock up and I would like to advise others not to commit violations,” he said.
