A Pakistani military aircraft on a training flight crashed in a built-up area in Rawalpindi city early on Tuesday killing all five crew members and 12 civilians.

A statement from the Pakistani military said the aircraft was on a routine training flight when it crashed but not provide details of the cause of the accident.

At least 12 injured people have been taken to the hospitals.

“The plane hit the side of the building and the structure it has crashed into has completely collapsed,” an army officer at the scene said.

The residents say they woke up when they heard an explosion and saw debris of a burning plane near their homes.

Army helicopters were seen hovering over the crash site later.
