At least 12 newborn babies have died under mysterious circumstances in an emergency hospital in central Panjsher province, an official said on Monday.
Mohammad Mansour Anabi, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News the babies lost their lives within one to 15 days of their birth between Saturday afternoon and Sunday in the emergency hospital.
He said some of the babies were born in the hospital and others had been brought there for treatment after their birth.
The reason how the newborns died is yet to be ascertained, said Anabi, stressing a team of doctors was investigating the issue.
Dr. Mohammad Akbar Jan, the hospital’s director, confirmed Anabi’s account and said six of the babies belonged to Parwan, three to Kapisa and four to Panjsher provinces.
He also said the reason behind the mysterious deaths was not yet known but investigation was underway in this regard.
