Enayatullah Alokozay, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, said that the ministry has registered 1.6 million SIM cards across the country within three months.
According to Alokozay, they have increased the number of employees for SIM card registration to provide more convenience for the citizens of the country.
The spokesperson for the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology said: “According to the information from the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, the Afghanistan Telecom Regulatory Authority (ATRA) Directorate has registered 1.6 million SIM cards in the past three months. The ministry has managed this process well for the regulation of SIM card registration and the registration of telecommunications networks, which was one of the demands of the Afghan people. Additionally, due to the increase in employees in the SIM card registration department, the process has sped up, allowing us to create ease for the people in the registration of SIM cards.”
At the same time, some citizens consider the registration of SIM cards useful in reducing the level of criminal activities.
Hakimzada, a resident of Kabul, told TOLOnews: “Registering SIM cards is beneficial both for security and for other reasons. The person responsible for the SIM cards must be accountable.”
Mohammad Ishaq, another resident of Kabul, said: “Our request from the Ministry of Communications is that we have registered our SIM cards, but we still receive messages and when calls are made, the network says to register your SIM card. We want these messages to stop because they are somewhat annoying for us.”
According to the spokesperson for the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, there are a total of 25 million active SIM cards across the country, of which 13.9 million have been legally registered.
