NATO’s Senior Civilian Representative in Afghanistan Sir Nicholas Kay says Resolute Support (RS) forces will support Afghan National Defense and Security (ANDSF) to provide security for the upcoming presidential election on September 28.
Speaking at presser in northern Balkh province, Kay called on contenders to adhere to rule of the game and respect the will of the people.
He said the objective of his visit to northern provinces was to assure the people that NATO forces would help Afghan forces in ensuring security for the election to pave the ground for fair and free poll.
“In past election many incidents of fraud have been seen and elections were engineered. Now as senior civilian representative of NATO, I call upon all stakeholder of election to adhere to the rule of the game and respect the will of the people of Afghanistan, because most of the people cast their votes under risky conditions,” he said.
The only way to settle the Afghan conflict is the direct talks between Afghan government and Taliban, Kay said.
“I believe the problem of Afghanistan should be solved through direct negotiations between Afghans themselves. Afghan government and Taliban should talk. Intra-Afghan negotiations will happen in near future. Taliban must know that Afghan forces have become strong now and they cannot win militarily,” he added.
