Mohammad Akram Khpalwak, head of the High Peace Council’s secretariat and senior political adviser to President Ashraf Ghani has resigned from both positions.

In his letter of resignation Khpalwak thanked Ghani for the opportunities he has been given during his time in both positions and said he had done the best he could to work for peace and prosperity in the country.

He also stated in the letter that he supports Ghani in his peace initiatives.

However, Khpalwak did not give details as to what had sparked his decision.

Khpalwak has been closely involved in the process to get the Taliban to the peace talks tables in recent times.

In September he attended a two-day meeting, along with other high-ranking officials, in Russia to discuss the proposed Moscow Summit.

No agreement was however reached at this meeting.

Khpalwak has been a politician for many years and has in the past served as governor of both Farah and Paktika provinces.
