At least 16 civilians, including 10 children, have been killed by a mortar shell in the Dawlatabad district of northwestern Faryab province, officials said on Saturday.

The district police chief, Col. Niamatullah Tofan, confirmed the civilian fatalities caused by the mortar shell that struck Tortah Atta area of the district a day earlier.

He said the security forces were establishing a check-post in Jumjumah Qala area, but the Taliban tried to prevent them. A fierce clash erupted between the two sides, with heavy weapons used by both.

Col. Tofan added it was unclear as to who had fired the shell. “According to doctors at the district clinic, the victims’ bodies were badly burnt,” the police officer said

Deputy Chairman of Provincial Council Abdul Ahad Albak also said the victims were civilians.

Clinic officials said, 13 bodies, including 10 children, two women and one man, as well as three wounded children and a woman, had been evacuated to the facility.
