The Loya Jirga (grand assembly) has historically been the best and tested way to steer the country out of abyss, and it is a channel that, according to historians, has successfully salvaged the country in many critical junctures. At the Loya Jirga, the real representatives of people get the chance to deliberate on the root causes of problems. They, as the prime victims or at least the witnesses of ongoing adversities, can feel the pain of people better than officials living behind T-walls or blast walls and highly-guarded compounds in Kabul, and in the light of ground realities of our society, offer proper and practical solutions to overcome the ills.

Calls for the convention of Loya Jirga have gained momentum amid the failure of the National Unity Government (NUG) to contain the deteriorating situation. Members of Mashrano Jirga (the Senate) have called on the government to hold Loya Jirga as per its promise, thereby paving the way for a national political forum. The senators have stressed there is a serious need for Loya Jirga more than ever given the status quo in the country.

The legitimacy crisis of the National Unity Government, deepening plight, dissidence of political groups, failure of government peace efforts, and the soft stance of government leaders towards the west further strengthen the need for the Loya Jirga. Represented by people from every stratum of the society and all walks of life, the Loya Jirga can decide all key national issues, from the illegitimacy crisis of the government to the fate of peace talks with militants, and also offer appropriate solutions.

Given the Loya Jirga’s significance, the government leadership should immediately take steps towards convening the Loya Jirga before the situation of the country further aggravates and spins out of control. By convening the Loya Jirga, one of the major election campaign promises of leaders of the National Unity Government would be fulfilled besides accepting at least a demand of the people of Afghanistan. The decisions of Loya Jirga are very important for the future of peace talks with insurgents, as well as the relations between Afghanistan and the west. Moreover, they can also play a constructive role and prove effective in putting an end to the existing rifts between various political sides in the country.
